…and what’s coming in February

Dear Hope Family,

Whether you are a regular at Hope on Girard or just joining us by way of our website, WELCOME!

The cold snowy days of January did not hold us back from a month filled with service
(and some silly stuff too!)

We brought in the New Year with our fourth annual New Year’s Alcothon. We held with Hope on Girard tradition by staying open all night long! We had a Speaker every other hour and the food was great!

The Holidays can be a challenging time for anybody, especially for people in recovery. Our Team at Hope understands that having fun together in sobriety is of paramount importance.

The early morning hours brought on the “Sleepy HaHa’s”…

and well deserved New Year’s Pancakes :)

On January 13th, we showed up for the first of this year’s six
Dining with Dignity Commitments.

Hope on Girard was responsible for providing 125 hot meals and 125 bagged lunches to those who are hungry at
St. Mark’s Church in the Frankford neighborhood of Philadelphia…

and we did just that!

This undertaking started weeks ahead with detailed planning and shopping. Special Thanks to our friends at
Liberty Kitchen for slicing 40 lbs. of ham for us!

The labor of love started on Friday night when Hope members stayed between the 8pm Dharma Recovery Meeting and the 11pm Late-Night Meeting
to assemble sandwiches and bagged lunches.

Saturday morning started early for our teams in Jersey and Philly who split the task of turning 40 lbs. of chicken into 125 servings of chicken parmigiana,
25 lbs. of green beans, 20lbs. of pasta.

Our Friends from Who Can We Help came to offer assistance…

and The Messengers always come through for the heavy lifting!

The afternoon was cold and rainy. The guests were served restaurant style by our volunteers and it was a joy talking with them.

Each left with a full belly, a bagged lunch and a smile. Thank you to all who made the day possible.

But that was not all…Sr. Warden Christina Mancini, graciously gave us the grand tour of St. Mark’s Church. What a treat that was!

Sr. Warden Mancini acquainted us with the rich history of St. Mark’s Church. The architecture is Gothic style with 56-foot ceilings crafted to resemble Noah's arc turned upside down. Built in 1907 for 1,000 worshipers, it was intended become the Cathedral of the Diocese of Pennsylvania.

As we walked through the sanctuary, we could feel the enchantment of over 100 years of worship.

Scottie plays the bells of the incredible antique bell tower that can be heard all through Frankford, daily.

The next part of the tour took us to the lower levels of the church where Sr. Warden Mancini revealed the community service she leads the church in.

She and her small team organize and distribute clothing, food and other supplies to those in need. Her commitment to the community is second to none!

Also on January 13th, we held our monthly Second Saturday Event. This month we showed Little Shop of Horrors. Such as Classic!

On January 28th, Hope held it’s 4th annual Blessing Day with Ms. Denise Baron.

Blessing Day has proved to be one of the Powerful annual events held at Hope on Girard.

This is a day when all are invited to come Bless the space, each other and the work we do together.

The ladies guided us through a blessing where we were encouraged to let go of the past, in order to start a new year open and clear to receive new blessings in our lives.
